We love Beccles! If you already live here, perhaps we don’t need to tell you why it’s great. Although a reminder never hurts and makes us grateful for what we have. If you’re thinking of moving to Beccles, we say – go for it! There’s lots to recommend it as a fantastic place to live. Here are just some of the things you have to look forward to…
The beautiful location
The town is nestled by the River Waveney at the southern end of the Suffolk and Norfolk Broads. There’s beautiful countryside all around, with plenty of walks that take you through the lush Waveney Valley. Walk or cycle the Beccles Marsh Trail and keep an eye out for otters, kingfishers and barn owls. On the water, you can try your hand at canoeing, kayaking, or hire a day boat for a slightly less energetic way to explore.
Slightly further afield, the beautiful beaches of Southwold, Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Thorpeness are all within easy reach, as is Norwich.
Its unique character
Beccles grew as a popular market town and still enjoys a weekly market – a blessing for any town. From fresh fruit and vegetables to a wide range of other staples, it feels good to support local businesses.
There are many familiar national retailers in the town, but what gives you all the more reason to visit are the quirky independent shops, cafes and restaurants that make Beccles unique.
The sense of community
For visitors from larger towns, it might take a while to get used to locals bidding you good morning as you pass them in the street. But as you settle in, this sense of community is a wonderful thing. It helps the town feel safe and friendly – and indeed, there are no crime trends or concerns.
There’s a lido!
There’s something special about Beccles Lido. There aren’t many open-air pools in the UK. This is an absolute gem. Perfect for those lazy, hazy days of summer, if you have kids, having this on your doorstep is a real win. And don’t worry – it is heated!
There are some great places to live in Beccles
Thanks to the town’s long and varied history, there are a wide range of housing styles on offer. From Georgian townhouses in Northgate to quaint cottages on Ballygate and Victorian Terraces around Denmark Road, if you’re after character, there are some lovely properties.
As one of the fastest growing market towns in the country, there are also plenty of newer houses for those who prefer modern living.
There’s positive development afoot
Whilst you’ll never please everyone, the plan for further new houses in the coming years does come with benefits. There are plans for new schools in the area, improvements to the local library and a new community centre. We believe Beccles is on the up!
